1 out of 5 stars Very poor absorption   September 1, 2010

After taking this brand of Vitamin D for nearly a year my Vitamin D levels went up by only 1 point. I did some research and learned that one needs to take an oil based Vitamin D in order to get good absorption. The body hardly absorbs any Vitamin D from these white tablets. Get an oil based vitamin D gelcap instead.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value   September 1, 2010

I've been taking these Vitamin D tablets for nearly a year. I won't make any wild claims, but I do believe that taking this supplement has been beneficial. But I mostly want to address a couple of negative reviews regarding quality and price.

First, as to quality, it's certainly true that dietary supplements are not regulated in the U.S., so it definitely pays to be vigilant. If you're concerned about the quality of Nature Made Vitamin D supplements, be sure to check out the National Library of Medicine's Dietary Supplements Labels Database. You'll learn that these supplements were verified by U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) in 2009, as to the label claims, absence of contaminants, efficacy of the supplement, and manufacturing processes. Here's a link to the NLM entry for this supplement:

Now, in regard to price, you can just do a bit of math to find out that these supplements cost just over a nickel each. So, an entire year's supply of 1000 IU tablets runs less that $[...] a year.

So, all things considered, I'd say that these supplements are an excellent value.

1 out of 5 stars Independent tests show no Vitamin D in capsules   May 14, 2010

Be careful with this particular brand of Vitamin D. There are reports that they actually don't have any Vitamin D in them at all. See: [...]

From the blog:

She starting 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood level was 18.1 ng/ml. Severe deficiency, no surprise.

On her 10,000 units per day, Vitamin Shoppe brand, her 25-hydroxy vitamin D level was 76.2 ng/ml--perfect. It stayed in this range for about two years.

She then changed to the Nature Made brand gelcaps she picked up at Walgreen's. Repeat 25-hydroxy vitamin D level: 23 ng/ml.

This has now happened with five different people, all taking the Nature Made brand.

The Nature Made ones are overpriced. You can get better quality ones (softgel) for far cheaper on Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars If you can't take big pills.   July 24, 2009

I have a hard time taking supplements because I am bad at taking pills at all. Also I did take the oil version but it made me sick.

I tried these and found that if you chew them they don't taste bad at all and can be broken up easily with no bad after taste. They are perfect for me and don't make me ill. I can take them on the run and just need a swig of water.
