It works, here's my story... August 22, 2010 Dan For four years I tried to get my cholesterol under control. I changed my diet, exercised, and used fish oil. Nothing worked, I even used flush-free Niacin for six months, and it failed too. My doctor kept trying to put me on a statin.
I then read an article from a doctor that said only immediate release niacin has been proven to work. So I bought this product, starting with the 500mg dose, and slowly worked my way up to the recommended 3000mg a day.
Six months later my doctor almost had a cow. My numbers were "perfect" he said, and he asked me how I did it. When I told him, I don't think he believed me.
Keep in mind, the first dose is the worst. Eat something with protein in it first, then take the pill. Trust me, over time, the hot flashes get weaker and weaker. Most of the time I don't even get a hot flash.
Great product -- PLEASE CONSULT YOU DOCTOR August 7, 2010 Mister Ed (Left Coast, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been using this product for a year after switching from GNC's niacin (B3). GNC's product was good, but very expensive. I no longer experience the "Niacin Flush" that people are complaining about.
Before taking any megadose supplement/vitamin, you should CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR. Taking large doses of vitamin B3 (niacin) requires you to have good liver function. If your liver function is poor, you could permanently damage it. My doctor specifically told me to STAY AWAY FROM THE "NO-FLUSH" NIACINAMIDE.
Niacin, vitamin B3 has been recommended for raising your HDL and lowering your LDL blood levels. The ratio of HDL to LDL has been linked with heart health. My doctor also recommended having 1-2 alcoholic beverages a day to help bolster the good effect. The doctors don't yet really understand how this all works, but the data is pretty convincing. Having more than 2 alcoholic beverages a day is counterproductive to heart health.
Your doctor should tell you that a "niacin flush" and itching are very common side effects that you may experience. That is why the doctor will tell you to start with a small ~100mg dose and then slowly work your way up to the 1,000mg dose. This gradual buildup will help keep your immune system from launching the very uncomfortable itching and blotchy rash "hives". Some have described it as being similar to a hot flash.
Once you build up to the therapeutic dosage, your body will recognize that the niacin is not going away, and will eventually stop or greatly reduce its response.
I hope this review helps some people to realize that taking megadoses of niacin should be taken with an informed consent, and the green light from your doctor.
Great product and effective July 20, 2010 T. J. Moyer (kissimmee, FL) Don purchase 1000mg if you have never taken Niacin. This is the real deal. You WILL get a rush. You will get flushed. You will be hot red and itchy all over. This is not an allergic reaction. This is an expected side effect. Please do NOT TAKE IT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!!!
Product as advertised +++ July 19, 2010 Malcolm Boston (Orlando, FL USA) I like the convenience of 1000 mg capsules. I take therapeutic dosage (1000 mg, 3 times a day) and these capsules allow me to avoid the mess (and inaccuracy) of measuring powder. It is NOT the flush-free version. It is the real thing and yes there is a flush associated with it. After three days, the intensity of the flush went away. Now, I know I've taken it, but I barely notice it. I definitely recommend it. The cost and convenience are great.
Really works to raise HDL June 22, 2010 Lou (NH Seacoast) Doctor has me on 2000mg a day, raised my HDL from very low to well within normal. I've been taking this for 4 years. Takes a little while to get used to the flushing. The no flush or slow flush type does not work.
