This is apparently the best cartilage supplement ...but apparently sharks are an endangered species... January 21, 2008 Krystof (New England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I give this product 3 stars, because it is by far the best quality cartilage product. The only negative is that sharks are an endangered species. If there is a standardized bovine cartilage, then someone please tell me and I will eagerly give it 5 stars. (Enzymatic Therapy used to make a standardized bovine cartilage, with excellent results, but which was discontinued due to lack of sales.) I agree with 'A Reviewer', in his review here at Amazon, that consumers have reason to boycott shark products. However I must disagree when he concludes: "Any improvement a user would feel would be mainly psychosomatic." Here is my layman's understanding. 1. Cartilage is a natural source of chondroitin, which is well proven to support the rebuilding of worn joints. The most frequently prescribed drugs, on the contrary, are primarily 'pain killers' that offer little or no rebuilding substance. This can be determined even from reading between the lines from sources that are strongly pro-drug, such as Quackwatch.org. 2. Cartilage supplements are theoretically a 'safe' form of chondroitin. Chondroitin deposits have been found to be an indicator of prostate cancer. Instead of being a suspected cancer agent, cartilage is a suspected anti-cancer agent. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen are all basic substances for joint repair. Many people do well by taking only one of these, but it makes sense to take all three. This can be done without cartilage, but cartilage is a good chondroitin source, and probably contains natural synergists. Joint repair is basically the repair of worn cartilage. 3. However, shark cartilage does not cure cancer. This is not only the conclusion of orthodox doctors, but also of researchers in favor of alternative medicine. Such as the Life Extension Foundation (LEF.org), based on a survey of their members. 4. Also, bovine cartilage is at least as effective as shark cartilage, either for cancer prevention or for joint repair. The greater popularity of shark cartilage rests primarily on the book, "Sharks Don't Get Cancer". However, most of the research from the original edition of that book was based on bovine cartilage, not shark cartilage. 5. Also, bovine cartilage comes from the 'trachea' of cows, which is not a high risk area for 'mad cow disease' (BSE). 6. However, any cartilage is basically indigestible. 'Standardization' is needed to filter out large molecules. Trying to digest standardized vs. non-standardized cartilage is like trying to eat chicken puree with the bones removed vs. a chicken puree with bones and all. 7. I have tested most major brands of cartilage pills, by chewing on the capsules. Usually, this makes me feel like gagging. Any non-standardized cartilage is, in my opinion, decidedly unfriendly. A standardized cartilage, like this Twinlab product, has a mild and 'melt-in-the-mouth' quality. 8. To my understanding, shark cartilage supplements are a minor byproduct of the food industry. A boycott of shark cartilage supplements might not have any impact on the killing of sharks, and is unrelated to the murder of sharks by cutting off their fins. Nonetheless, researchers are recently concluding that 90% of the world's shark population has been destroyed. It is reasonable to demand that any shark product should be 'guilty until proven innocent'. The manufacturers of shark products can easily report on the labels what species their products come from, and the situations of those species. Twinlab should be asked to do so.
Shame on you if you buy this January 16, 2007 Beergoggles 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As the review above says: 'only the highest quality shark cartilage extract obtainable'. So even more sharks had to die pointlessly to create this 'so pure' a product, did they? Is this really going to ease you of your ailments? Get real. Mass slaughter for a pointless product. Any improvement a user would feel would be mainly psychosomatic. Shame on anyone who buys this stuff, and on Amazon for stocking it.
